The Birth of the Consortium <\/span><\/span><\/h2>

The Consorzio della Vernaccia di San Gimignano was established on 3 July 1972 by a number of enlightened San Gimignano winegrowers who, conscious of the historical and territorial value of Vernaccia di San Gimignano wine (the only wine mentioned in the Divine Comedy by the supreme poet Dante Alighieri), believed it was essential to protect, appreciate and promote this unique ancient white wine and the exclusive territory from which it originates.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Appellations<\/span><\/span><\/h2>

The Consortium worked relentlessly, obtaining the Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (Designation of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin) for Vernaccia di San Gimignano in 1993 and the San Gimignano Rosso DOC in 1996.
\nIn 2012, it obtained approval of the amendments to the \u201cSan Gimignano DOC\u201d production regulations, which regulate the production of both the different types of Rosso and the Vinsanto and Rosato produced in the millenary wine-growing area of the historic town of San Gimignano.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>

\n\u201cerga omnes\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/h2>

Also in 2012, forty years after its foundation, when the Consortium represented more than 40% of the producers, who were collectively responsible for more than 65% of the wine produced, it became Consorzio \u201cerga omnes\u201d, exercising the protection, promotion and appreciation of all producers of the appellations, including non-members.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

The Consortium today<\/span><\/span><\/h2>

Today, the Consortium protects the collective brands of the Appellations, supervises the markets, manages the policy of the Appellations and oversees the Production Regulations. It fosters knowledge of the wines under its protection and their conscious consumption, promoting the territory of origin, the thousand-year history and the ability to interpret the present and the future with the style of each individual winery, while respecting the identity of the product.
\nIt is the expression of men and women with a passionate commitment to the land, who dedicate themselves with love, effort and determination to hillside viticulture of excellence.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>

The Consortium has its head office in San Gimignano, in the historical and hilly Tuscan turreted city, in the central point of the territory from which all the protected wines originate, in other words, in the ‘Kingdom of the Queen of Tuscany’.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>
