Mission

Protect, monitor, promote and appreciate the wines that have been born in our territory for centuries.

The Consortium is the legal expression of the Community of Winegrowers of San Gimignano.

Determined and tenacious men and women who have recognised the Consortium’s tasks of protecting, monitoring, promoting and appreciating those wines that for centuries have been born there and only there, in the heart of Tuscany and only in San Gimignano, and that manage to delight all those who taste them.

Protection and registration of collective brands, market surveillance activities

The Consortium is responsible for the control of products on sale on the market: it takes samples of wines on the market and verifies their actual correspondence, also in analytical terms, with the requirements established by the respective production specifications.

Faced with the numerous attempts at plagiarism and usurpation of the names of the wine protected that have occurred in recent years, the Consortium, with the financial support of the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies, has set in motion a path aimed at creating a legally irreproachable system for safeguarding names, also at international level. The final stage of this path is the registration of Vernaccia di San Gimignano as a collective brand in many countries around the world.

Management and certification of the Appellations

The Consortium works hard to adapt regulations to the needs of the producers, requesting laws to support the protection and the origin of the wines and proposing changes to the Production Regulations. In collaboration with universities and research institutes, the Consortium is engaged in studies and experiments in the fields of viticulture and oenology to improve the sustainability of the products it protects.

The Vernaccia di San Gimignano Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (Designation of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin) protected is subject to a ministerial control system which, thanks to the mechanism of numbered labels printed by the Poligrafico dello Stato, guarantees consumers complete traceability of the wines.
The organisations involved in these traceability activities in addition to the Consortium are the Region of Tuscany, which manages the planting of the vineyards and checks their registration in the individual company files, as well as the third-party certification body chosen by the Consortium, currently Valoritalia, which organises both the chemical-physical analyses and the Tasting Commissions.

Promotion and Appreciation

The Consortium supplies information and material to institutions, Italian and foreign journalists, industry opinion leaders and consumers.

Working also in collaboration with other organisations, the Consortium organises numerous promotional initiatives and events. Appointments that have become scheduled over the years are the Anteprima del Vino Vernaccia di San Gimignano (Vernaccia di San Gimignano Wine Preview), held in mid-February in San Gimignano, and participation in the main international wine fairs (Vinitaly and Prowein in particular) where the Consortium organises specific events in its stand, aimed both at enhancing knowledge of and promoting the wines it protects.

Since 2017, the Consortium has been managing “La Vernaccia di San Gimignano wine experience”, the multimedia museum of Vernaccia and the permanent showcase of the labels of the protected Appellations, in the most evocative place in the historic town of San Gimignano, the ancient Rocca di Montestaffoli. This is the place where thousands of people meet the local wines protected by the Consortium, learn about their characteristics and enjoy participating in the many master classes and professional tastings organised every day.

The Consortium is strongly committed to communication, both traditionally through the press and all media, and, since 2020, also through its social network accounts, managed professionally with the help of industry experts who carry out specific “promotion campaigns” aimed at constantly improving the market positioning of the appellations protected.

The Consortium is the legal expression of the Community of Winegrowers of the town of San Gimignano, determined and tenacious men and women.
